Consecutive AFC title game appearances in 2009 and 2010 must seem like a distant memory to the Jets following their disappointing 2012 campaign.

With the Jets still searching far and wide for a new general manager, the football world has turned its attention to the excitement and drama of the 2013 NFL playoffs. For the second straight season, Gang Green finished on the outside of the AFC postseason picture looking in with wholesale changes already ushered in by owner Woody Johnson.

New York has already made changes at offensive coordinator, defensive coordinator, special teams coordinator, strength and conditioning coach and most notable general manager. With a complete offseason makeover expected in the months to follow, Rex Ryan and company are in full tilt rebuilding mode as they ready for their 2013 regular season campaign.

Finishing the year 6-10, the Jets were remarkably in the playoff hunt until a heart-breaking loss in Week 15 to the Tennessee Titans. Uncertainty surrounds the quarterback position specifically if Mark Sanchez is in the organization’s plans moving forward.

The former No. 5 overall pick in the 2009 NFL draft is not guaranteed a roster spot next season in light of his poor play, but with his trade value almost non-existent the Jets may be forced to release their former franchise signal-caller and absorb a significant salary cap hit.

The dilemma on the Jets hands is far deeper than just the quarterback position, but in a quarterback-driven league they’ll need to find answers and quickly. Tim Tebow appeared to be on his way out of the Big Apple, but with the trade market for New York’s Wildcat specialist at an all-time low, it’s not a forgone conclusion that he’s one and done with Gang Green.

With the conference titles games fast approaching, it seems like ions ago that the Jets were playing for a chance to clinch a Super Bowl berth.
