Merely 24 hours before the Jets introduced new general manager John Idzik, reports surfaced that the Jets ownership group isn't optimistic it can ink star cornerback Darrelle Revis to a long-term contract. With Revis becoming a free agent following the 2013 season, speculation is growing that Gang Green will look for possible trade suitors for their most talented player this offseason.

All-Pro cornerback Darrelle Revis is no longer an untouchable player on the Jets roster. CBS.com first reported on Wednesday that New York Jets owner Woody Johnson is willing to explore the trade market for his star defensive back if he can receive fair value in return.

In the wake of his trade speculation, Revis expressed displeasure with the thought of playing outside of the Big Apple.

“I’m speechless,” Revis said via his official Twitter account, “but more importantly I feel more upset for the Jet nation for having to go through this!!!”

Why trade a premier shutdown cornerback and the best player on your team?

There are several reasons behind the possibility of a Revis trade that should be taken into consideration.

In 2010 Revis sat out during the preseason because he was unhappy with his contract. He had developed into a dominate cornerback, probably the best, and he felt that he was outplaying his contract. The Jets added another year to his remaining three years, which was a total of $46 million.

After the 2013 season Revis will become a free agent. Every team will be salivating at the chance of signing such a strong playmaker like Revis. There is a clause in his contract that prohibits the Jets from using the franchise tag on him. Revis is projected to have a large asking price, and this could hurt the Jets plans of signing their star player considering they are already $19.4 million over the salary cap.

Gang Green finished 6-10 last season and missed the playoffs. It’s obvious that the Jets are in a rebuilding stage, and may want to get younger as a team. If the Jets can’t sign Revis before the 2013 season is over, they may try to trade him. Teams will most likely jump at the opportunity of being able to acquire Revis.

Revis is only 27 and is already one of the top cornerbacks in the NFL. He will earn $6 million next season, but will look to receive a large contract as a free agent. Revis is possibly one of the greatest players in Jets history, already making four Pro Bowls and being named a First-Team All-Pro three times.

What worries organizations most is the fact that Revis recently had major knee surgery stemming from a non-contact ACL injury during Week 3 against the Miami Dolphins.

Revis has stated publicly that he wants to stay with the New York Jets. He was drafted by the franchise in the first round of the 2007 draft and lives in the area. Johnson and new general manager John Idzik are worried they will be unable to sign Revis to a long-term contract. Idzik already has to worry about several free agents this offseason. If the Jets receive an offer that they can’t refuse, expect Revis to be suiting up elsewhere next season.
