With the draft around the corner, let’s examine where the Dolphins stand at every position, what they’ve done in the offseason and what prospects could interest them in the early rounds of the 2013 draft. This installment looks at the running back position.

On the roster: Jorvorskie Lane, Daniel Thomas, Lamar Miller, Marcus Thigpen, Jonas Gray

Offseason moves: Lost Reggie Bush (free agent, Detroit)

Analysis: The Dolphins used draft picks the last two years to bring in Thomas and Miller in the hopes of building depth and/or finding their running back of the future, but the truth is Bush was the team’s most dynamic offensive player the last two years. But now Bush is gone after the Dolphins reportedly made little effort to re-sign him. Thomas showed flashes in his first two years, but he’s also had problems with injuries. Miller is the wild card here because he possesses intriguing ability but needs to learn the finer points of the game. Lane is solid as the fullback, while Thigpen was a find out of the CFL as a kick returner. The Dolphins have a lot of confidence in Miller’s long-term ability, but it’s the fact that there’s little prove talent on the roster at this point.

The draft class: It’s no great secret that the running back position has lost importance in recent years, but teams always will make an exception for exceptional prospects. Unfortunately, there isn’t that kind of back — like Trent Richardson last year — in this draft. It actually looks like a rather mediocre class.

BREAKING DOWN THE RB PROSPECTS:

The top prospect: Eddie Lacy, Alabama

Likely first-round picks: Eddie Lacy

Overrated prospects: Giovani Bernard, North Carolina; Montee Ball, Wisconsin

Under-the-radar prospects: Stepfan Taylor, Stanford
