Bills trip Rams

Posted Aug 24, 2003

It didn't take too much for the Bills to get back to their winning ways; a pep talk along with 3 quarters of action from quarterback Drew Bledsoe, two semi injured Bills, and a few windsprints later, the Buffalo Bills upset the St. Louis Rams in a much impressive 4th quarter wretching fashion.

The Buffalo Bills came out firing. Drew Bledsoe had a stealthy night completing 22 of 29 passes for 231 yards, 2 touchdowns and 1 interception. Much emphasis was based on the offensive line last week in camp practices, and it showed on the field Saturday night as they allowed ZERO sacks. Many times when St. Louis blitzed, Jonas Jennings would stand out for laying some massive blocks, giving Bledsoe more time to throw than last week against the Titans. Gaps where quickly closed and holes where opened for Travis Henry and Joe Burns as they combined for 73 yards on 12 attempts.

The offense combined for 354 total yards. Running back Travis Henry left the game early after twisting his foot, he is expected to be ready to go next week, but may sit out. Jonas Jennings took a wounding blow to the head, resulting in a concussion. His status is still undecided.

The Buffalo defense held strong for 3 consecutive Rams' offensive series before finally letting up a score. The starting defense sacked Rams quarterback Kurt Warner 4 times, mostly on tight pass coverage. Cornerback Antoine Winfield and defensive lineman Ron Edwards each had 1 sack and defensive lineman Aaron Schobel had 2 to finish up the night (5 total sacks by the defense). The winning tackle was a sack by Josh Stamer, that caused a fumble which was recovered by defensive end Marcus Jones to end the game. The goaline offense continued to improve as the Bills reserve defense stacked up the Rams offense led by QB Marc Bulger 4 consecutive times at the 2 yard line to force a field goal.

Takeo Spikes took charge of the defense with his first game back from a small groin injury as he re-energized the 3rd largest crowd in Buffalo Bills pre-season history of 62,286. He recorded 3 tackles while chasing St. Louis Rams QB Kurt Warner out of the pocket on many occasions.

The wide receivers clearly stole the show, as the 5 who played recorded 218 yards for 19 receptions and 3 touchdowns, with Eric Moulds nabbing over 110 yards by himself. Moulds exploded past the Rams secondary all day and made many slant pattern ecquasions including one very nice catch on the Rams far sideline. Pre-season breakout Clarence Coleman failed to appear much in the Bills offensive play but did record a fumble, 1 reception for 3 yards and a touchdown. Josh Reed and Bobby Shaw both showed their speed while combining for almost 90 yards. James Jett has yet to be seen in the pre-season play. He is expected to be cut on Tuesday.

The Buffalo Bills special teams that has shown extreme improvement continued to show great potential as they averaged a very healthy 14 yards on punt returns, including a long punt return of 37 yards from Clarence Coleman but was fumbled and recovered by the Rams. Tony Driver also bobbled a kickoff return, but fell on it soon after to retain possession. Antonio Brown saw limited return duties.

Not only did the Bills play better this week but the penalties were greatly reduced in Saturday's effort as they were flagged 6 times for 45 yards, one being what appeared to be a shaky pass interference call by the referee on a breakup in the end zone at the end of the third quarter. There were no offensive penalties. However fumbles continue to sicken the Bills. 4 against the Rams, although luckily Buffalo could recover 3 of those back. The win Saturday night at Orchard Park puts Buffalo with a 2-1 preseason record, next week the Bills will once again be the host to Joey Harrington and the Detroit Lions.
