When Alex Van Pelt joined the Bills in 1994 he looked like he wouldn't be around long. Little did we know he'd be with the team for nine seasons.
Van Pelt joined the NFL as an 8th Round out of the University of Pittsburgh in 1993 by the Steelers.
He was waived by the Steelers and picked up by the Kansas City Chiefs a few months into the regular season.
The year after he joined Buffalo late in the season to serve as the team's 3rd string QB. Though by season's end he was cut once again. The Chiefs brought him back for their training camp but cut him soon after. He then returned to the Bills where he would become a career backup for many Bills QBs including Jim Kelly, Todd Collins, Doug Flutie, Rob Johnson and most recently Drew Bledsoe.
In joining the Bills Radio Network he replaces John Murphy as the Bills Color Analyst. Murphy himself served in that role prior to replacing former Bills play by play man Van Miller who retired earlier this offseason.
Van Pelt was released because he failed his team physical as he was recovering from an injury he sustained during the 2003 season to a ligment in his throwing wrist that was surgically repaired earlier this month. His release/retirement may open the door for the Bills to sign Billy Volek whom the team talked to on Monday.
