Bills Free Agency Report

The Buffalo Bills tried hard to sign Tennessee backup QB Billy Volek late last week and earlier this week. Though in the end he choose to re-sign with the Tennessee Titans. With Volek now out of the picture the Bills can turn their attention to other free agents.

The team has brought in former Falcon backup QB Doug Johnson for a workout today. Johnson joined the Falcons as an undrafted free agent out of the University of Florida in 2000 and has had an up and down career as the primary backup to Michael Vick. He guided the Falcons to victory in their season opener last year against the Dallas Cowboys. That would be the only win he would guide his team though the blame can't fall on Johnson alone as the Falcons had one of the worst defenses in the league last year. At 26 years old Johnson could be a potential "QB of the future" if signed or be used as a veteran backup to current QB Drew Bledsoe.

Also paying visits to the Bills today are TE Brian Kozlowski and CB Terry Cousin. Kozlowski a career backup may fill the "Dave Moore" void for the Bills. That's a veteran blocker who can be used in two tight end sets and in goal line situations. Cousin can also provide the Bills with a veteran backup at corner or possibly as a starter if free agent signee Troy Vincent is shifted to free safety. As Cousin was a starter for the NFC Champion Carolina Panthers over the past two seasons after being a spot starter for the Bears, Falcons and Dolphins earlier in his career.

Free Agent Guard Bobbie Williams is rumored to meet with the Bills tomorrow and might be signed to add depth to the offensive line or replace Ruben Brown who was cut earlier this offseason. Brown himself was expected to workout for the Bears today.

Late last week the Bills also entertained former Bengals DT Oliver Gibson. A nine year veteran Gibson was cut be the Bengals earlier this offseason to give the team more cap space. If signed Gibson might be used as a backup this year and a potential short term replacement for Pat Williams who is due to be a free agent after this season. Gibson was first drafted by Bills current GM Tom Donahoe when he was then with the Steelers and choose the former Notre Dame grad in the 4th Round of the 1995 draft.
