Bills cut 14; place 1 on IR to get to 53

Jason Gildon

The Bills trimmed their roster to the league-mandated 53 players, there were a few mild surprises in who was let go and who remained.

The two biggest name cuts were veterans DE Keith McKenzie and LB Jason Gildon. Both were thought to help the Bills pass rush this season. McKenzie just couldn't seem to surpass younger players like Chris Kelsay and Constantin Ritzmann on the depth chart. Gildon just struggled adjusting from being a career rush LB in Pittsburgh 3-4 scheme to a down lineman in the Bills 4-3.

The others cut were QB Greg Zolman, RB Ken Simonton, FB Luke Lawton, WRs Drew Haddad and Jonathan Smith, TE Rodney Trafford, OLs Marques Sullivan, Ben Sobieski, Jason Esposito, DT Lauvale Sape, LB Dominique Stevenson and CB Gerald Dixon.

Additionally, QB Travis Brown was placed on the Reserve/Injured list meaning he will miss the enture season unless he reaches an injury settlement and is cut by the team like he was last season. Although would not be able to return to the Bills until after Week 10 of the regular season.

The team can start signing players to it's practice squad tomorrow afternoon. The squad has increased this season from five to eight and it wouldn't be surprised to see many of these players brought back.
