L.J. Shelton visits Bills

Posted Feb 19, 2005

L.J. Shelton met with the Buffalo Bills on Thursday. Shelton's trip included a physical, but trade talks would probably only be considered preliminary at this point. As quite a few other teams are interested in Shelton.

As we reported weeks ago, the Cardinals have given L.J. Shelton's agents permission to seek a trade, and it's believed as many as 10 teams are interested in the former 1st Round pick. Among those most interested are the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Chicago Bears and St. Louis Rams.

As we speculated if dealt to the Bills, it could be a rare player-for-player trade. The Cardinals are interested in Bills RB Travis Henry, who wants to traded from the Bills after losing his job to Willis McGahee last season.

The Cardinals have a need at running back as the only experienced RB on the roster, Marcel Shipp, missed last season with a fractured left fibula.

The Bills may have a need for a LT, where Shelton has played for most of his six NFL seasons. As Jonas Jennings is an unrestricted free agent, and the Bills might not be able to re-sign him.

The 6-foot-6, 335-pound Shelton played well in 2002 and 2003,and as a result signed a contract extension in 2003 but has already has collected $10 million under the new deal which would allow the Bills to only take on his yearly contract. He is scheduled to make $3 million in each of the next four seasons which is far below the market rate that Jennings could be seeking.

Henry has one year left on his contract, at $1.25 million and would mean Cardinals would probably sign him to an extension if a trade is made between the two teams.
