Ex-Bills do well in playoffs' first round
Wade Phillips and Ted Cottrell

A trio of former Bills enjoyed great weekends during NFL Wild Card weekend, shedding light on just how good Buffalo had it when these coaches and players were part of the Bills organization a few seasons ago.

Former defensive coordinators Wade Phillips (now Atlanta’s defensive coordinator) and Ted Cottrell (now the Jets’ defensive coordinator) created game plans that locked down Green Bay and Indianapolis in impressive fashion.

Phillips’ Falcons defense helped Atlanta defeat the Green Bay Packers 27-7 on Saturday – the Packs’ only home playoff loss dating back to 1933. Atlanta held Green Bay to 56 yards rushing. It prevented Brett Favre (20 of 42) from completing 50 percent of his passes too. Ex-Bills free safety Keion Carpenter intercepted two passes. He also was third on the team in tackles.

Cottrell’s Jets held the Colts to 176 total yards during a 41-0 slaughter at the Meadowlands on Saturday. Four of Indianapolis’ 10 drives were three-and-outs.

The Giants, who lost 39-38 to San Francisco Sunday, could have used former Bill Dan O’Leary, whom the Bills cut in the preseason. O’Leary long-snapped for New York during most of the season, but was out with torn thumb ligaments. So prior to its Wild Card game with, New York signed veteran Trey Junkin, whom the Bills drafted as a 1983 fourth-round pick from LSU. Junkin played linebacker then. The Bills released him during the ’84 season and the Redskins signed him. He also played for Seattle and Arizona. The Giants signed him last week.

It was a bad move.

The 41-year-old Junkin botched two successive long snaps during the fourth quarter, which helped prevent the Giants from beating the 49ers. Junkin later lamented that they were the fifth and sixth botched snaps of his 20-year career.
