LB Chris Draft: Bills sign LB by Tyler Dunne of BuffaloFootballReport.com, October 14, 2009 at 1:36pm ET
Chris Draft Profile
Help is on the way. After both Marcus Buggs and Kawika Mitchell suffered season-ending knee injuries last weekend, the Bills have added a veteran to the depleted unit.
Buffalo signed free agent Chris Draft today. Draft, a 10-year veteran, started nine games for the St. Louis Rams last year. He was released by the Rams in this past summer's training camp. Draft brings some much-needed versatility to Buffalo. He has experience at all three linebacker spots.
In the season finale at middle linebacker, he led St. Louis with nine tackles. He had 38 tackles on the season in 12 total games. The 5-foot-11, 234-pound Draft has been a starter virtually his entire career with Atlanta, Carolina and St. Louis. His best season came in 2003 with the Falcons when he had 124 stops with 2.5 sacks.
While he probably won't get thrown into the wolves immediately, Draft should bring a veteran presence to Buffalo's raw linebacker corps. His play took a sharp decline in two seasons with the Rams, but he may have enough gas in the tank to give the Bills the steady, calming influence they need.
As mentioned earlier, Paul Posluszny may be ready to play this weekend. Stay tuned to the BFR for continued news and analysis on the shakeup at linebacker.
Buffalo also signed veteran safety Todd Johnson, who has 22 career starts in seven seasons with St. Louis and Chicago. The secondary needed depth with the injuries to Donte Whitner (thumb) and Byron Scott (ankle).
